Authenticity in characters

By Anthony James Barnett

I abhor a story where one of the protagonists unexpectedly behaves out of character; in fact, I've recently tossed a novel to one because of it.

Protagonists should be authentic.

I am amazed how some authors get away with it. For heaven’s sake, story people are supposed to be GENUINE aren't they? If a story character is supposed to be withdrawn, they shouldn’t be placed in a job as a television broadcaster. It wouldn’t happen in actual life, so why in a novel.

I should know, I could be an introvert for England. I did a radio show a while ago, and I was scared stiff. I can't stand being the focus of attention, so why put fictional people in daft positions? It simply doesn't work!

Protagonist’s goals and responses MUST be in harmony with the context of the storyline. They should not do misleading things just to make a shoddy line healthier. Readers might just start searching for another book if you do....

Make your story-people authentic, guys. Make them believable! Keep your readers happy and they might just come back for more.

I see your point, but there is one thing that you need to consider. People in the "arts" -- like me for example, are often introverted when they are out of their element. But once in their element, it's a different story altogether. Plus there are instances when someone's "hot button" is pressed. In this situation, an introverted person can become extroverted in a hurry. Then there are those "exceptional people" that are hard to figure out and can constantly surprise you with their unpredictability. Not all people fit easily in a mold...
