Jalon Valley Writers Group
By Anthony James Barnett
Jalón valley, set amongst the sierras of the Costa Blanca in Spain, is an area of stunning natural beauty. Enclosed by raw mountains, the rich alluvial plain supports an abundance of olive, almond, and citrus groves. Heady Stuff Vineyards provide numerous bodegas with grapes for the ubiquitous wines of the area, whilst a wealth of restaurants serves diverse styles of Mediterranean food. In spring, Jalón becomes a delight of blossom, in summer, the villages turn sleepy, in autumn, fiestas are loud and cheerful, and in winter, warm days become the perfect foil for cold nights. Heady stuff for artistic souls. No wonder the area supports so many successful writers. The Aim and History of the Group Jill Morrison and Agnes Hall founded Jalón Valley Writers Group in October 2005. They met and become friends through their love of writing and for several years discussed their ambition to form a group of like-minded people. Jill says: "I belonged to Hastings Writers’ Group (of which Catherine Cookson was a founder member when it was formed, some sixty years ago) and loved being a member. The one thing was missing from my life in Spain. I missed not only the support of other writers – writing is a lonely business – but also sharing in the successes and commiserating with the failures. The pooling of information is a vital part of the group i.e. which competitions are available, which publishers and agents to avoid. "The Internet is a vast – almost limitless – fund of information for writers but you have to know where to find the best sites. From the very beginning, the group has attracted a number of diverse writing talents and we try to cater for the needs of all our members, whether published or unpublished. The only qualification for membership is that you have a love of the written word." Agnes says, "The urge to write came only in retirement after spending a life too busy to indulge. Taking my first steps in writing, guided by Jill ensured that I was ‘hooked.’ As Jill says, writing can be a lonely business and it is always useful to have other’s opinions, criticisms and friendships to help steer one in the right direction…and so the Jalón Valley Writer’s Group came into being, creating a forum where there could be interaction between like-minded people. Although the balance of the group leans more towards prose now, there is also a great interest in poetry and we welcome anyone who has an interest in any aspect of the written word. The group is open to anybody, from those who are just beginning to feel their way, as well as those who have a background of more expertise."
