Reducing supermarket packaging
By Anthony Barnett
At last – the Spanish supermarket chain, Mercadonna has listened to customers. It’s started to cut down on packaging a little, only a small amount, but every little counts. The fruit and vegetable section previously only sold pre-packaged items, and what does that mean – loads of wasted packaging. Now, it’s selling goods loose. You collect the amount you require in a thin plastic bag, weigh it, and put the sticky tag from the weighing machine on the bag. All done. No excess packaging. Great stuff. A benefit of this type of system is you get to select your own items, instead of perhaps accepting fruit or vegetables that might be ‘off’ on the side you don’t see. Another benefit is you get to take home the exact amount of items you wish. Families don’t come in the size they stuff in packages – which means inevitable waste. So, thumbs up all round to Mercadonna. Keep it up. What’s your next move in reducing packaging?
